Suitable custom recovery and root tool was released not long after Nexus 5X showed up at smartphones market. Thanks to that, now every user after following our tutorial, will be free to modify Nexus 5X for his own needs.

This TWRP install and Root tutorial is compatible with all Nexus 5X models running Marshmallow 6.0

Warning: All the data stored in internal memory won’t be deleted, but for safety reasons it’s still recommended to make a backup to device microSD card or PC before starting the tutorial below.
Prerequisites:
• Nexus bootloader must be unlocked. This tutorial shows how to do it.
• Device should have at least 60% charge left on the battery.
• USB Debugging and OEM unlock must be enabled. Go to Settings/About/Software Information/More and keep tapping on Build number until you see that Developer options was enabled. Then go to Settings/Developer Options and check both, USB Debugging and OEM unlock.
• Skip driver installation if you have used our bootloader unlock tutorial. If not, then adb drivers must be installed on PC. It’s recommended to restart your PC after installation is complete.
TWRP install tutorial:
  1. Turn off the Nexus and boot into fastboot mode: hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time until fastboot screen show up. Nexus fastboot
  2. Download to PC twrp-3.0.2-0-bullhead.img file and rename it to twrp.img
  3. On PC open cmd window: holding shift key, right click on empty space in folder where twrp.img file is placed and choose Open command window here.
  4. On cmd window type fastboot devices then press enter.
  5. You should get a serial number approving that device is properly connected into fastboot mode. If not, try to connect cable to another PC USB port or reinstall the drivers.  fastboot devices
  6. Next type fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and hit enter.
  7. TWRP recovery will now be installed on your Nexus.
  8. After installation is complete, type fastboot reboot to reboot Nexus.
  9. You can boot to TWRP recovery by turning off the device and booting into fastboot mode, as you’ve done in step 1. Then press the Volume down button twice so that Recovery Mode appears on screen. Push the Power button to confirm. Nexus 5 Recovery mode

Root tutorial:

  1. Download SuperSU.zip file straight to mobile device.
  2. Boot Nexus into TWRP recovery by following 9th step written above.
  3. In recovery menu tap on Install and look for superuser.zip file.
  4. Tap on it and swipe to flash.TWRP flash SuperSU
  5. After flash is complete tap on Reboot and choose System.
  6. Phone will reboot and you should find SuperSU app on the screen.

Compared to the other devices, unlocking bootloader on Nexus is easy as 123. You don’t have to go through lots of steps like visiting official website, registering account, looking for the unlock code in your email and so on.
All you have to do is to follow those simple steps given below.

Warning: Unlocking bootloader voids devices warranty. Proceed at your own risk.
During the unlock process, device internal storage will be erased. It’s strongly recommended to back up all data before getting started.

Prerequisites:
• USB Debugging and OEM unlock must be enabled. To enable it, go to Settings/About phone/Software info and tap on Build number 7 times. Go back and choose Developer options, then enable USB Debugging and OEM unlock.
ADB drivers must be installed on PC.

Tutorial:

  1. Turn off the Nexus and boot into fastboot mode: hold down the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time until fastboot screen show up.Nexus fastboot
  2. Connect it to PC via USB cable.
  3. On PC go to ADB and Fastboot drivers folder and open cmd window: holding shift key, right click on empty space in folder and choose Open command window here.
  4. On cmd window type fastboot devices then press enter.
  5. You should get a serial number approving that device is properly connected into fastboot mode. If not, try to connect cable to another PC USB port or reinstall the drivers. fastboot devices
  6. Next type fastboot oem unlock and hit enter. Unlock process should take just a couple of seconds.
  7. Type fastboot reboot to reboot Nexus.
  8. When Nexus boots up, you’ll see a brief warning about the phone being unable to check for corruption, which you can ignore. Nexus corruption
  9. When the Google logo appears on screen, there will be an unlocked padlock icon beneath it, approving that Nexus bootloader is successfully unlocked. Nexus bootloader unlocked

In case if you lost your Android device or it got stolen, all that’s left is a hope that security lock will protect your valuable personal data without being accessed and used with evil intentions. Unfortunately, if the person who’ve found your Android phone knows how to pull files using adb drivers, whole data can be transferred to PC. Other way to reach personal information on locked device is to boot into custom recovery menu and mount selected partitions so they become accessible via USB port.
But in most cases, lost and found devices simply got factory reset so they can be sold or used over again. That’s why Google started to use account lock feature since the release of Lollipop 5.1. Once the boot process begins, the device will ask to enter previously linked Google account and password. Now, the device becomes unuseful and that’s how Factory Reset Protection works.

Imagine, you forgot your password and Google account details. Does it mean you can’t even use your own Nexus anymore? That’s not fair! So here’s how to bypass FRP on Nexus in minutes following the tutorial below.

Prerequisites:
• Nexus must have a SIM card in it.

Tutorial:

  1. Turn of the phone and boot into Recovery Mode by pressing and holding down the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons all together.
  2. Use Volume button to select Recovery Mode option. Press Power to confirm.
  3. After dead Android icon appear, hold Power then hit Volume Up button to enter Recovery Mode.
  4. Next, choose wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes.
  5. After factory reset is done, choose reboot system now.
  6. Setup wizard will show up. Tap on any WiFi connection to get the enter password field. Instead of entering the password hold down “,” button and go into settings.
  7. Tap on language and then tap on the three vertical dots on the top right of the screen. Then choose Help & feedback.
  8. Search bar will show up, type anything there and hold the text to select “Share” from the popup menu.
  9. Choose share via Google messenger. Once the app opens, tap on New message.
  10. Dial any number in the To input field and then select Send to.
  11. You’ll see a contact’s icon on the top right of the next screen. Tap on it and choose tick mark icon. This will bring up phone dialer.
  12. Type any number to start a call.
  13. During the call, hit pause button and then hit add dialer button. This will bring up the dialer.
  14. In the input field, type *#*#4636#*#* to access test mode.
  15. Choose Usage statistics and then tap on the back option. Now you’ll access the settings menu.
  16. From the settings, you can factory reset your phone.
