Xiaomi Mi5 TWRP Recovery & Root

This TWRP install and Root tutorial is compatible with all Xiaomi Mi5 models running Marshmallow 6.0

Warning: All the data stored in internal memory won’t be deleted, but for safety reasons it’s still recommended to make a backup to device microSD card or PC before starting the tutorial below.

• Xiaomi Mi5 bootloader must be unlocked. This tutorial shows how to do it.
• Device should have at least 60% charge left on the battery.
• USB Debugging and OEM unlock must be enabled. Go to Settings/About/Software Information/More and keep tapping on Build number until you see that Developer options was enabled. Then go to Settings/Developer Options and check both, USB Debugging and OEM unlock.
• Skip driver installation if you have used our bootloader unlock tutorial. If not, then adb drivers must be installed on PC. It’s recommended to restart your PC after installation is complete.
TWRP install tutorial:
  1. Connect Xiaomi to PC via USB cable.
  2. Using PC download TWRP MI5.rar file and extract it.
  3. On PC open cmd window: holding shift key, right click on empty space in extracted folder and choose Open command window here.
  4. On cmd window type fastboot devices then press enter.
  5. You should get a serial number approving that device is properly connected into fastboot mode. If not, try to connect cable to another PC USB port or reinstall the drivers.  fastboot devices
  6. Now you need to boot Xiaomi into fastboot mode. To do so, type adb reboot bootloader and hit enter. Xiaomi Mi5 fastboot
  7. Next type fastboot flash recovery twrp-mi5.img and hit enter.
  8. TWRP recovery will now be installed on your device.
  9. After installation is complete, type fastboot reboot to reboot Xiaomi.
  10. The easiest way to boot into TWRP recovery without any specific buttons combination is to use Quick Boot app.

Root tutorial:

  1. Download SuperSU.zip file straight to mobile device.
  2. Boot Xiaomi into TWRP recovery by following 10th step written above.
  3. In recovery menu tap on Install and look for superuser.zip file.
  4. Tap on it and swipe to flash.TWRP flash SuperSU
  5. After flash is complete tap on Reboot and choose System.
  6. Phone will reboot and you should find SuperSU app on the screen.
